VANCOUVER www.officialhockeyjetsshop.com , British Columbia (AP) — The San Jose Sharks took no pity on teenager Mike DiPietro making his NHL debut in the nets for the Vancouver Canucks.Evander Kane scored twice, leading the Sharks to a 7-2 rout of the Canucks on Monday night. The victory moves San Jose into first place in the Western Conference and extends the Sharks’ winning streak to six games.Timo Meier, Melker Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, Kevin Lebanc and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks. Martin Jones had 25 saves.Bo Horvat and Derrick Pouliot scored for Vancouver. DiPietro stopped 17 of 24 shots in his NHL debut. The 19-year-old native of Amherstburg, Ontario, was called up from the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s on an emergency basis last week after Canucks backup Thatcher Demko was sidelined with a knee sprain.“I don’t feel bad at all for putting him in the net,” Canucks coach Travis Green said. “He’s here, he’s the backup. I didn’t have another choice. That’s who we had to play tonight,” the coach said.“I don’t think he’s upset that he played. I think he’s pretty excited that he played.”Jacob Markstrom, the team’s starting goalie, was slated to start on Monday but was scratched as a precaution due to tightness in his lower body.“Definitely not the ideal first game,” DiPietro said. “But it’s something I’ve dreamt about my entire life and to have the opportunity this young to do it, it’s something that’s positive for me, that I’ll take as a learning experience.”As the game went on, the young goalie felt more comfortable and said he’ll focus on the things he did right as he continues working on his game.“When you focus on the negatives too much, you’re going to feel like an ant in the net,” he said.DiPietro struggled early, letting in the first shot of the game after Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson failed to corral the puck behind the net.Logan Couture collected the puck and dished it to Meier Winnipeg Jets T-Shirts Authentic , who fired it past DiPietro 1:04 into the first period. The Sharks added another goal just minutes later off a high shot by Kane. Vancouver defenseman Ben Hutton attempted to punch the puck out of the air in front of the net, but instead sent it in off of DiPietro. When Karlsson added San Jose’s third goal 8:48 into the opening frame, the Canucks had yet to register a shot.Despite a slow start, Vancouver seemed to find its way late in the first, tying up the Sharks in their own end. With just seconds left on the clock, rookie Elias Pettersson sliced a pass to Horvat down low. The center hammered a slap shot past Jones to put the Canucks on the board.Vancouver out shot San Jose 13-5 in the second period, but the Sharks added goals from Kane, Hertl and Lebanc.Lebanc’s tally came from a 2-on-1 in which Joe Thornton drew DiPietro across the crease before dishing off to the right-winger.The assist was the 1,050th of Thornton’s career. He passed Gordie Howe for ninth place on the league’s all-time assists list.It was also the 39-year-old center’s 1,457th NHL point, tying Teemu Selanne for 15th place on the all-time points list.“That’s an unbelievable accomplishment, unbelievable career, and that’s something that should be really celebrated and I think our whole group and I are excited we were here to witness that,” said Sharks coach Peter DeBoer. “Gordie Howe’s career speaks for itself but when you get a guy like Joe Thornton that actually passes him on the assist list that is an amazing accomplishment.”Logan Couture said he’s speechless over sharing a dressing room with someone who has passed a Howe milestone.“It’s pretty crazy,” said the San Jose center, who had two assists. “(Thornton) is a special player, he’s been a special player for two decades and I still believe that he is underrated. I still don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for how world class a player he has been for two decades. Pretty special.”Vancouver’s second goal came from Pouliot 12:06 into the third. Zack MacEwen assisted on the play. It was the 22-year-old’ MacEwen’s first NHL point and came in his league debut. He was called up from the American Hockey League’s Utica Comets on Sunday.Pavelski added the final goal of the game less than two minutes later.“It’s pretty cool, taking a look up and seeing Joe Thornton and Pavelski right across the ice and shooting on me,” DiPietro said. “Obviously when they score on you it’s not too good. But I had to pinch myself and just stay in the moment.”Despite the result Winnipeg Jets Hoodies Authentic , Horvat had kind words for Vancouver’s young goalie.“It’s not easy to come right from junior and play an NHL game. So kudos to him for stepping up there,” Horvat said. “And honestly, I think he played a heck of a game. He made some unbelievable saves out there. We hung him out to dry for a lot of those goals and he had no chance on them.”NOTES: Vancouver has placed center Brandon Sutter on injured reserve with a lower body injury. … Pavelski registered an assist on Meier’s goal, marking his 400th NHL assist. … San Jose defenseman Erik Karlsson missed Monday’s game with a lower-body injury.UP NEXTSharks: Host Washington Capitals on Thursday.Canucks: Start a three-game California swing at Anaheim on Wednesday. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Evander Kane couldn’t help himself. Skating near the Pittsburgh Penguins bench late in the third period Thursday, the San Jose Sharks forward took a peek at Pittsburgh’s whiteboard, which may — or may not — have written down the time it planned on pulling goaltender Casey DeSmith in an effort to get back into the game.“I like to think a little bit of a savvy veteran thing to do, right?” Kane said. “If you can see it, why wouldn’t you look at it?”Even if it was hardly necessary. Not with the Sharks well on their way to a dominant 4-0 victory behind two goals from Tomas Hertl and a short-handed marker by Kane in the first 14 minutes. The Penguins, out of a mixture of frustration at their own sloppy play and Kane’s gamesmanship, took exception, and it bubbled over into a late on-ice dust-up that ended with the odd sight of Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby mixing it up with San Jose’s Micheal Haley, someone far more known for his work with his fists than his stick. While Kane tussled with Tanner Pearson, Crosby traded punches with Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon before Haley — who has nine career goals and 592 penalty minutes — jumped in. The two were separated relatively quickly, and Haley downplayed the notion he was actually brawling with the three-time MVP.“I don’t know if I’d call that a fight,” Haley said. “If all the fights were like that, I’d take it. My body would feel a lot better. No, actually. It’s pretty hard for me to get a hold of guys like him. But things happen in a hockey game, and I’m glad we came out on top.”The scrum ended with Crosby, Haley Winnipeg Jets Hats Authentic , Dillon, Pittsburgh defenseman Marcus Pettersson all earning 10-minute misconducts, and Penguins coach Mike Sullivan getting ejected. Sullivan declined to get into why he was tossed. He was only a bit more expansive on his team’s first-period pratfall that allowed San Jose to take a commanding.“We take a penalty a minute into the game and it snowballed from there,” Sullivan said. “We gave them three fairly easy goals. It’s hard to overcome that.”Martin Jones stopped all 26 shots he faced to earn his 21st career shutout. Brent Burns picked up his 12th of the season late for the Sharks, who have won eight of 10 overall to pull within one point of Calgary for the top spot in the Pacific Division.DeSmith finished with 29 saves, but Pittsburgh stumbled out of the gate and never recovered to lose for just the second time in six games.“We made a few mistakes early and they happen to be big ones,” Crosby said.Hertl scored a hat trick in San Jose’s 5-2 victory over the Penguins on Jan. 15 and wasted little time going to work in the rematch. Pittsburgh defenseman Jack Johnson took a penalty for hooking less than a minute into the game, and Hertl put the Sharks in front when he pounced on a rebound and lifted it over a sprawled DeSmith 1:44 into the first.Kane doubled San Jose’s advantage 10:01 into the first when Pittsburgh’s power play — which has careened between dynamic and dreadful all season — endured another breakdown that ended up with the puck in the back of its own net.Burns tipped the puck away from Phil Kessel at the blue line, and Kane chased it down before flipping a backhand between DeSmith’s legs. Kane’s 27th goal of the season was also the 13th short-handed marker allowed by Pittsburgh, the most in the NHL.Hertl’s 28th goal of the season — the one that pushed San Jose’s advantage to 3-0 just 13:19 into the game — might also have been his easiest. Logan Couture fought off two Penguins to keep the puck in at the blue line, and Hertl retrieved it before passing it to Joe Pavelski in front. Pavelski slipped it cross-ice to Kevin Labanc. Labanc held it for a second — just long enough for DeSmith and Pittsburgh center Matt Cullen to collide — before passing it back to Hertl, who was just outside the blue paint when he put it into the empty net.Cullen and DeSmith shook their heads in disbelief while Johnson — who has come under fire recently — angrily fetched the puck out of the net.NOTES: Cullen played in his 1,495th game, tying him with Hall of Fame defenseman and current Buffalo Sabres coach Phil Housley by the third most all-time by an American-born player. … Several Penguins wore rainbow tape on their sticks during pregame warmups as of “Hockey Is for Everyone” night. The sticks will be auctioned off to raise money for “You Can Play,” an advocacy group that promotes safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ athletes, coaches and fans.UP NEXTSharks: Continue a four-game trip in Columbus on Saturday.
